A BABY SHOWER

A little birdy told us there is a tweet baby boy on the way;
Sara Culley is anxiously awaiting the special day.
You are invited to be our guest, so flock on over and help feather her nest!

Last weekend I hosted a Baby Shower for my friend Sara who is due with her first baby, a boy, in September. I really like hosting parties. I like everything that comes with them...other than cleaning the house before...and cleaning up the house afterwards... Anyways, I love making menus and decorations...all the fun stuff! When I decided to have this shower, I googled "baby boy shower" to peruse the images people have put out there. There were tons of pictures of "feather her nest" themed showers. I loved it and decided that was going to be our theme along with the color scheme of chocolate brown, baby blue, turquoise, and lime green. We used polka dots and brocade patterns as well in things. So with the help of another great creative mind (Stephanie Hessel) we created a darling looking shower. I designed the invitations on the computer which had tree limbs with a blue mod bird and nest with an egg. We purchased unfinished wooden birdhouses from craft stores and decorated them with craft paint in our color scheme, scrapbooking paper, and mod podge...oh and a little glitter...yes, I know this was for a baby boy but I love glitter! They turned out pretty stinkin' cute. Another night, Stephanie taught me how to make tissue paper pom poms. Have you seen these things? They are so festive and SO EASY and cheap to make! We hung small and medium ones over the fireplace and over the buffet.
I also hung a banner that I made out of scrapbooking paper with my cricut. It said "Tweet Baby Boy". Stephanie made the wreath pictured above out of a swim noodle taped together and two feather boas...so cute! I got a great idea from another friend, Erin Keeven, to use small galvanized buckets for the silver ware, napkins, and other small things. I double~stick taped on several strands of ribbon around the buckets to make them match. On to the the most important part...the brunch! The main course was Mini Egg Frittatas, Spinach, tomato and Parmesan and Bacon and Cheddar (a recipe of Giada de Laurentiis). They were very tasty and very easy to make...and anything mini is cute too! We also had roasted breakfast potatoes, Creme Brulee French Toast Casserole...oh my...so super duper good, French Cinnamon Breakfast Puffs..also really good (a recipe of Pioneer Women), Cranberry Orange Scones (recipe of Alton Brown), Strawberry and Gouda Spinach Salad...very colorful and tasty, and a beautiful Fruit Salad. The food was fabulous!
The "tweet baby boy" banner, pom poms, and two pedestal birdhouses.
Two birdhouses on a square of fake grass...Stephanie's idea...again...so cute.
Another birdhouse centerpiece.
Flowers on the coffee table. They were with notecards and ink pens. The notecards said "a little birdy told me to tell you...". The guests were asked to write a note, some advice, or a story to Mommy~to~be Sara.
The buffet! We used 2 yards of polka dot fabric on top of the white cloths. The birdcage had faux eggs and a nest at the bottom and little glittery lime green birds perched on it.
Another centerpiece, a cloche with eggs. The mason jar glasses...another idea of Stephanies...she tied a small turquoise tag with twine around each one to put each guests name on...again...so cute!
The drink buffet. We had Sparkling Pineapple~Orange Juice, Iced Sweet Tea, and Coffee.
DESSERT!!! Red Velvet and Double Chocolate Cake Ball Pops perched in a nest...they tasted SO GOOD!
The favors: Blue bird Sugar Cookies. They tasted super good as well. They were purchased from Iced Up Confections by Molly. She did a great job of matching the theme!

A Big THANK YOU to Stephanie Hessel, Erin Keeven, Erin Stone, Courtnie Norman, and Molly Igleheart for helping with everything...couldn't have pulled it off without all of them!

Hair bows!

First: I love my baby girl so much. I love all her sweet clothes. I love dressing her up in those sweet outfits with matching shoes, socks, and most of all... HAIR BOWS! I love big hair bows on tiny babies. I also love my darling boys, but dressing up a boy just isn't quite as fun. (More fun now that I am looking for outfits to match their sisters.) Second: I am frugal. I would like to be less frugal but our budget requires it and honestly it is just part of who I am. I would love to be able to just pay for things to save me the time and hassle (and once in a while I do) but sometimes I just can't rationalize paying someone to do something I technically can do myself. For example: Personal Chef (I kind of like cooking but with 3 kids under 4 isn't super fun these days), Landscapers (while I like the little tan I get, I don't like really like sweating or the dirt under my nails), Diaper Service (I like my bum genius diapers but I don't love washing those poo stained things), and the list goes on... On this list: Hair Bows. I will be honest, I have bought a few hair bows off of eBay, generously received some as gifts, bought a few at a garage sale and even have some hand-me-down bows. BUT, while packing away Kinley's winter wardrobe and arranging her spring and summer outfits I discovered she had quite a few that did not match any of the bows hanging on her bow holders. AHHHH! So last week, I made a trip to Hobby Lobby (a seriously dangerous place for me and my wallet) and bought several spools of ribbon. Don't worry, it was on sale at 50% off :)
I attempted several times to make some bows. All Epic Fails (I learned that term from the kids at school--I like it!) Seriously. A little hair bow could not be this complicated. Me, the person with a college degree in ART could not make a decent looking hair bow. I watched tutorials on YouTube...fail. I studied the professional hairbows I bought...fail. After listening to my husband gripe about the pile of yards of ribbon, blobs of dried hot glue, clippies, fraycheck, and lopsided bows on my kitchen counter several times (and rightfully so...it is quite a pile), I started cleaning it up today. Then I started thinking, if I put this stuff away, it will probably never come out again. So I decided to plug in the glue gun and try again. Finally, SUCCESS! Amidst a pounding headache, potty training, and laundry, I finally created a decent looking hair bow. Now, I will not be quitting my job to make and sell bows, but I won't be totally embarrassed to put them on Kinley either. So here are a couple of the winners (and some losers). Now I need to make another trip to Hobby Lobby!

Love this one--she has several outfits to match it!

I love pink and lime green together!
Well I like the colors but it just isn't cute...fail!
X marks the spot! I like the "tails" on bows but couldn't get them right so no more tails...fail!
